![]() ![]() Studio Strings delivers quick and easy ensemble and solo orchestral strings for modern productions of all kinds. A decent array of matrix-assigned modulation sources and an arpeggiator make it more interesting than it looks. Hot Brass is a brass and saxophone ensemble instrument geared up for punchy, energetic riffs and stabs. Raven is more obviously appropriate for pop and other contemporary styles, while Eagle suits jazz, classical and solo work. Both share the same interface - including controls for adjusting the Sustain Resonance, velocity curve, and release layer volume - and sound lovely. Raven and Eagle sample classical Italian and German concert grand pianos respectively, the first with six velocity layers, the second 12. HALion 6 adds more than 25GB of new sample content in the shape of six scripted instruments. Importing a sample as a wavetable is done by dragging it into the interface and selecting a Marker Creation Mode to split it into a series of contiguous waves - Equal Distance (all markers are evenly spaced), Exponential (the spacing gets wider through the length of the sample), Spectral (markers are placed according to spectral changes) or Spectral Voiced (spectral and pitch changes). It comprises two wavetable oscillators (each with up to eight unison voices in Multi-Oscillator mode) and a sub oscillator, with each wavetable holding up to 256 waveforms. This adds to the existing Synth (analogue-style synthesis), Sample, Grain (granular synthesis) and Organ (tonewheel emulation) Zones with a remarkably capable wavetable and resynthesis engine. Making wavetablesįor sound designers, the biggest new feature in HALion 6 is the Wavetable Zone. HALion 6 (VST/AU/AAX – yay, AAX at last!) sees the integration of yet another flavour of synthesis, as well as real honest-to-goodness sampling, the ability to build your own custom instruments, and a boatload of new sampled content. The Iconica products need fairly high end systems to use effectively - in particular, you may well find yourself needing 32GBytes of RAM and the Iconica samples on an SSD.With multiple synthesis engines added over the last three versions, though, it now does so much more than just play back audio that it’s better described as a ‘sound design workstation’. If you can’t get a HALion Symphonic Orchestra trial, it should work with a Dorico Pro 3 trial licence. Steinberg offer time-limited trial licences for the Iconica products and I think also for HALion Symphonic Orchestra. That said, if HALion Symphonic Orchestra meets your needs it is a lot cheaper than Iconica. I only have HALion Symphonic Orchestra because I own both Dorico Pro 3 and Absolute 4. Considering the wealth of orchestral libraries in the marketplace, I think there are likely to be better value for money options than a standalone HALion Symphonic Orchestra licence if you can only afford a budget option. HALion Symphonic Orchestra is bundled with Dorico Pro and Absolute. Iconica products work with the free HALion Sonic SE 3 as well the separately sold HALion Sonic 3 and HALion 6 - but neither of the paid-for HALion products include any Iconica content. Iconica Opus is a bundle licence that authorises both Iconica Sections and Players and Iconica Ensembles - it is a little cheaper than buying both products separately. The Iconica products must be bought separately - they are not included in any non-Iconica product. ![]() It contains some good quality samples but does not have the articulation options that would be expected of an orchestral strings library. Studio Strings, which is part of HALion 6 and HALion Sonic 3, is intended to provide a string section for contemporary projects. Iconica Ensembles has various predefined ensembles using orchestral instruments - it can be used to quickly add an orchestral ensemble to an existing project or to quickly sketch an orchestral idea, amongst other things. It is a high end orchestral library containing nearly 200GBytes of samples. Iconica Sections and Players is a much more modern orchestral library produced in conjunction with Orchestral Tools. HALion Symphonic Orchestra is a rather old and basic orchestral library - it is better than nothing and is the default orchestral playback library for Dorico Pro. ![]()
